Managing Genetic Diversity and Representation in Banksia marginata (Proteaceae) Seed Production Areas Used for Conservation and Restoration

چکیده
Landscape degradation is a major threat to global biodiversity that being further exacerbated by climate change. Halting or reversing decline using seed-based restoration requires tons of seed, most which sourced from wild populations. However, in regions where urgent, seed sources are often fragmented, declining and producing with low genetic diversity. Seed production areas (SPAs) can help reduce the burden collecting native remnant vegetation, improve diversity managed crops contribute species conservation. Banksia marginata (Proteaceae) key south-eastern Australia but highly fragmented across much its range. We evaluated diversity, population structure relatedness two B. SPAs populations SPA germplasm was sourced. found high levels within remnants best described three groups trees. suggest likely be important meet future demand practice protocols required assist land managers design manage these resources including analyses guide selection germplasm.

Seed production areas for the global restoration challenge
Wild-collected seed can no longer meet global demand in restoration. Dedicated Seed Production Areas (SPA) for restoration are needed and these require application of ecological, economic, and population-genetic science. SPA design and construction must embrace the ecological sustainability principles of restoration.
متن کاملCost-effective microsatellite markers for Banksia integrifolia (Proteaceae)1
UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY Microsatellite markers were developed to assess the level of genetic variation and population structure in Banksia integrifolia, a widespread species endemic to eastern Australia. • METHODS AND RESULTS We used next-generation sequencing approaches to identify and develop 11 polymorphic microsatellite markers with perfect tri- and tetranucleotide repeats. We ...
متن کاملThe Importance of Plant Provenance and Genotypic Diversity of Seed Material Used for Ecological Restoration
The increased translocation of plant species for biodiversity restoration and habitat creation has provoked a debate on provenance and genotypic diversity of the used plant material. Nonlocal provenances are often not adapted to the local environmental conditions, and low population genotypic diversity may result in genetic bottlenecks hampering successful establishment. We tested provenance di...
